Dental Crowns

Thanks to modern dental technology, the porcelain crowns of today are strong and attractive, and some are equal in strength to porcelain-fused metal crowns. At Miller Family Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee, we have the ability to make porcelain crowns and place them in one appointment. Same-day crowns save you the fuss of coming back for a second appointment, and they provide excellent strength, function, and esthetics as a traditional dental crown. These one-visit crowns are called CEREC crowns, and we can use several different materials depending on your unique needs.

What are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a strong, permanent cap that protects a damaged tooth and restores its proper function. We may recommend that you get a dental crown if you have one of the following conditions:

  • A tooth that is very worn down
  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • A severely decayed tooth
  • A tooth weakened due to an injury
  • A tooth that contains a defective filling

Dental crowns are designed to be stronger and more durable than fillings. They reliably protect your tooth, giving it the support it needs to retain its function.

What are Same-Day Dental Crowns?

Same-day crowns use CEREC or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. During your dental crown appointment, we first prepare your tooth, numbing the area and reducing the size of the tooth. Then, we create a virtual 3D model of your mouth and teeth using digital scans. The CEREC system uses the model to design a dental crown and then fabricates it from various ceramic materials. This is accomplished during one dental appointment at our office in Nashville. The fabrication only takes about 45 minutes to an hour. We can put it into your mouth right away when the crown is complete, permanently fixing it in place.

Difference Between Traditional and Same-Day Crowns

The obvious difference is the time it takes to complete the crown process. A same-day crown requires only one appointment, while a traditional crown needs to be fabricated in a dental lab, requiring a second appointment two or more weeks after the first visit. As far as reliability goes, same-day and traditional crowns last about the same amount of time, 7-10 years or longer, with good home care.

Does It Hurt to Get a Same-Day Crown?

No, we numb your mouth so you don't feel the reshaping process. However, if the nerve of your tooth is unhealthy, the tooth may begin to hurt later. Contact us if this happens so we can take a look and provide a solution.

Caring for a Same-Day Crown

Caring for your crown is easy. All you need to do is practice good brushing and flossing habits and allow us to check the crown during your regular checkups.

What is the Cost of a Same-Day Crown?

Same-day crowns cost about the same as a traditional crown. While the cost may seem expensive, they are durable, giving your tooth long-lasting protection. Some dental insurance plans cover part or all of the cost of a dental crown. We will discuss the costs before the treatment.
